Prince Edward Island
Beaches and more beaches…
Here we are back to the normal situation… we had no idea what to expect and we loved every inch of it!
Prince Edward Island is called PEI. When you call the island by its formal long name.. you have not been there!!! ha ha
We took a ferry from Caribou, Nova Scotia to Wood Islands in PEI. It was about 2 h long ride and even the kids got to come inside the seating area and check out sea birds.
PEI is flat, surrounded by hundreds of miles of pristine beaches. All the earth is color red and on the north west side even the water is deep red on the shallows. Island was not as wooded as Nova Scotia and was dominated by corn and potato fields mainly and made its agricultural source. Landscape is dotted with cow, sheep and chicken farms. Few horses thrown into the mix.
Little fishing village
They do farm world famous oysters like Malpeque and Bedeque oysters and export them all over the world.
Summer tourism is HUGE. PEI has over 1 million tourist come to the island during summer months.. May to September. We were there mid September and 90% of the island tourist destinations were just shutting down. But with the size of campgrounds, amount of restaurants and tourist shops all over the island one can imagine the tourist amounts during the summer.
For our surprise PEI does get quite a lot of snow during the winter months unlike south Nova Scotia. Snow plows were present on the side yards waiting for snow .. like you see in Maine.
Big campground and we were pretty much on our own!!!
For all the summer tourists there are plenty of beach space for everyone…
The red water and beaches of PEI is a result of high concentrations of iron-rich minerals in the island’s sandstone bedrock that oxidizes when exposed to air and water
The color of the water was really weird to see first time… south and east shores water is “blue” and north and west side is “red”.
An other camp spot on the beach! Cedar Shores Campground
We found little forest to do some trail running with Rhona
Our one week visit to PEI was great. We have seen more empty beaches in last 3 weeks and the kids have enjoyed every inch of them.
We took the Confederation Bridge out of PEI to New Brunswick and mainland. It is 8 miles long bridge and is world longest bridge over ice covered water… hmmm… had to get it somehow… to be “worlds longest….” ?!?
Next up Bay of Fundy and Fundy Provincial Park !! Looking forward to do some serious hiking with Rhona and Kaya and Ian is gearing up for miles on his bike….
